- Review:: 'good suggestions, but everything highly rated is pricey
Overall, this book is very informative. Especially for first time parents, I would highly recommend it. However, many (and perhaps all) of the highly rated items, agencies, people are also very expensive. It is not very helpful if you are looking for information on raising a baby in the bay area on any sort of budget. However, if money is no object, this book is for you.
- Review:: 'Devoid of North Peninsula Info Overall, this is a good list of resources, but is probably most useful to the first-time parent or someone who is new to the area. For most sections, they cover the criteria you should consider when making your selections and perhaps the process. Very useful information. I found it very good for explaining exactly how one hires a nanny in the bay area or how you get your kid into preschool. Much of the listings for activities, museums, etc. can be found in a phone book. And the "ratings" don't really help for any of the activities because most of them are unrated, but the few that are nearly always rated 5 stars. The books biggest failing is its dearth of information for the Peninsula and South Bay, two distinct areas which they merge together under the heading "South Bay". I guess they do that to disguise how thin the info is compared to that for San Francisco and the North Bay. Note that if you live in the "north peninsula" (Milbrae, San Bruno, South San Francisco, Daly City) that for these 4 densely-populated towns the listings are ESPECIALLY thin, even compared to the lightly covered Burlingame, San Mateo, Redwood City, and Palo Alto. On the north peninsula, you will not find a single listing for any preschools or parks, and only 2 daycares are listed. Sections are: Ch 1: Obstetricians, Midwifes, Pediatricians, Hospitals, Birth Centers, Prenatal educators, labor doulas, cord blood banks, infertility treatment programs, adoption, help for kids with special needs, resources to protect your workplace rights. Ch 2: Pre- and Postnatal aerobics, yoga, pilates, fitness classes, personal trainers, fitness facilities with childcare, walks/hikes and Moms groups that do walking/hiking, pregnancy and postnatal massage. (Note: This chapter seems the most thorough) Ch 3: Maternity clothes, including national chains, local retailers, online outfits and resale shops. Ch 4: Baby Equipment. national chains, local retailers, nursery designers and muralists(!), equipment rental, online/mailorder/used, baby clothes retailers, toys/books, resale shops, where to donate used goods/clothes, babyproofers and safety goods. Ch 5: Postpartum help: Baby nurses and Doulas, breastfeeding resources, postpartum depression resources, parenting hotlines, meal prep & delivery. Ch 6: Parenting classes, parenting clubs/groups, Ch 7: Classes for Kids: recreation departments, gym/gymnastics, swimming, music, art, dance, drama, foreign language, sports, misc Ch 8: Activities: parks & playgrounds, beaches & pools, zoo & wildlife, indoor playgrounds, museums, rainy day activities, libraries and storytelling, trains and boats, adventures (iceskating, Bonfante gardens, etc.), restaurants, special events for kids, resources for local traveling with kids, birthday parties (entertainers, caterers, planners(!) etc.) Ch 9: Childcare: seminars on finding childcare, day care licensing offices, childcare referral networks, regular day care centers, drop-in/sick-child daycare. Resources to do independent searches for nannies, do background checks, handle the legalities, benefits and taxes, nanny placement agencies, au pair agencies, babysitting services & resources. Ch 10: Preschool. Preschool education consultants(!), preschools.
- Review:: 'For Bay Area Mothers - a babylicious resource This late 2005 edition is a rich resource of all things mothers and fathers need to know for bringing up baby. A very helpful maternity insert for new gifts for Bay Area babies.
- Review:: 'A "must-have" for any parent of the Bay area Expertly co-authored by Michelle L. Keene (Executive with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) and Stephanie S. Lamarre (Active member in various North Bay parenting groups) Babies By The Bay: The Insiders Guide To Everything From Doctors And Diapers To Playgrounds And Preschools In The San Francisco Bay Area is a thoroughly "user friendly" reference to everything necessary to know for San Francisco, San Mateo, Marin, Contra Costa, Santa Clara, and Alameda with additional information on the counties Napa, Sonoma and Santa Cruz. A "must-have" for any parent of the Bay area, Babies By The Bay really covers every given ground for having a child and taking proper care with cost efficient and intelligible techniques and reference to every imaginable necessity. Babies By The Bay is very strongly recommended to all mothers of the Bay area.
- Review:: 'Disappointing First, I read this book when my son was 10 months old. I was able to skip over the first 2/3 of the book about doctors, hospitals, maternity clothes and much of the gear that goes with babies. Even then, I noticed that it had the same information that one could find by searching the yellow pages or Yahoo. For a better written how to find gear book, check out "Baby Bargains" and even "Toddler Bargains" by Denise and Alan Fields. I was looking forward to finding activities for family outings in my area but again found the standard things that I could find on the net or in the phone book. The book seems to focus on North and East Bay and SF. The content for Peninsula and South Bay are pretty lacking. Check it out of the library if you have to.
A Guide to the Bay Area's Greatest Off-Road Bicycle Rides (Regional Mountain Biking Series):
Book by Lorene Jackson. Falcon 296 pages Paperback Published 2004-08-01. Description: This handy guide offers more than 80 rides from the birthplace of the mountain bike revolution; from the top of Mount Tamalpais to the redwoods of Big Basin. Ride legendary Repack, Annadel State Park, Mount Diablo, Wilder Ranch, Henry Coe State Park, and El Corte de Madera Creek Open Space Preserve. Mountain biker, triathlete, and author Lorene Jackson offers tidbits on local history, wildlife, and points of interest to make this more than just a trail guide to the best mountain bike rides in and around the San Francisco Bay Area, including rides in the North Bay, South Bay, East Bay, and San Francisco Peninsula.
- Review:: 'Good Guide, Used it Quite a Bit Picked this up for an extended Northern California hiking and riding trip. I purchased about four others as well and I used all of them as each has a little something different. Not a single one was useless and none warranted less than 4 stars. I would reccomend doing the same rather than just picking one for your trip.
- Review:: 'Never Wonder Again Where to Find Good Dirt As a serious S.F. Bay Area cyclist for over 40 years I approach any guidebook to my "back yard" with a certain degree of skepticism, as in "What new can you possibly show me?" I was delighted to find that Ms. Jackson did indeed show me some new mountain biking delights I'd overlooked, but along the way I learned even more new tidbits about what I supposedly already knew. Almost every featured ride has "enrichment" far beyond the necessary trail and topographical stats. No doubt the author learned things from her literary predecessors, which is as it should be, but there is also no doubt she has written the currently definitive off-road guide for mountain bikers of this region. The miracle of the S.F. area is that 5 million people can live so close to so much open space. It is no mean feat to review it all personally, provide directions that are simultaneously explicit and open ended, and simultaneously appeal to the first time rider and a "show me" old time rider such as myself. But Ms. Jackson has done this much, and more. I mean her guide book is not only that, but a fun read as well. Imagine!
- Review:: 'For the Rider, the Wannabe, and the Curious Mountain Biking the San Francisco Bay Area is what the title says it is and much more. Lorene Jackson has tackled a huge subject (argueably the area with the largest number of mountain biking options in the country) and covered it well, providing the rider with all he/she needs to know before hitting the trail. But she does more than that. Beyond describing the ride, the terrain, and what's of interest, she makes each ride enticing. Beyond offering detailed descriptions of 40 rides around the Bay Area, plus 17 more "Honorable Mentions," she provides much background material and information that will equip the novice and intermediate rider to be prepared and assured of a pleasureable experience. But what I enjoyed most was her breezy enthusiasm that will draw many armchair riders to actually get on a bike and head for the mountains. Lorene Jackson and this book should spread the mountain biking "gospel" beyond it's current circle. I can't wait for her book on Lake Tahoe rides!
- Review:: 'An Excellent Bay Area Mountain Biking Resource! If you love moutain biking in the San Francisco Bay Area, then this book is your new best friend! Detailed maps, great photos and tons of great rides that will challenge and inspire you as well as leave you breathless (both figuratively and literally). This book's detailed descriptions of where to catch the trails and navigate some of the best mountain biking in the world is a must for both locals and visitors to the birthplace of mountain biking. I especially loved the Marin trails section because it opened my eyes to some rides I didn't know about which have now become some of my favorites. And if you love single track riding, then Jackson will take you on some of the most harrowing rides you can imagine -- I've got the scabs and scars on my knees and thighs to prove it! Buy this book!
